When I began thinking about how I was going to create the newsletter this week, I decided to go in a totally different direction than I normally would have. As a designer, I am always trying to push myself a little bit further; get out of my comfort zone. So I began looking at all sorts of references, but this time I looked only at things that made me feel a little bit uncomfortable. The newsletters I looked at were bold and different and definitely didn’t always stay locked into a grid. That’s where my inspiration began.
After finding materials that appealed to my tastes but not necessarily my style, I started to put together the newsletter. Instead of staying strictly to the style I thought would work for “the client” I looked at the copy in shapes and blocks. This helped me to put the design first and the article second. While this isn’t a great habit to get into all the time, I think it was a good exercise for me this week.
The final piece has certainly evolved into its own creation. I pushed my design capabilities a bit further this week, and in the process I made myself a little bit uncomfortable. But when has being comfortable brought about terrific art? While this may not be one of my best pieces of design, it certainly is different.
