Project 5 - Newsletter
The objective of this assignment was to create a four page newsletter that was restricted to two colors. This assignment reminded me a great deal of our Information Sheet project from week 3 in that there was a large amount of information provided that had to be constructed in a way that was both visually appealing and easy to read. However, this project required the information to be spread across several pages and the hurdle that had to be faced was how to arrange all of the elements into one harmonious piece.
The first step in creating this project was to do a good amount of research into practical examples of newsletters being used today. By searching the web as well as some program templates, I was able to get a basic idea on how I wanted to structure my newsletter. Following my investigation, I created a few rough sketches to see if a could arrange all of the components of this piece into a fluid design. My choice of color was influenced by a blue computer screen and the orange highlight color was chosen because it is complimentary and worked well visually. After making some quick layouts in InDesign, I next looked for imagery that would fit into my piece. I knew from the beginning that I wanted elements of technology, so I chose computer oriented graphics and decided to illustrate an rural mailbox as a contrasting image for the article that dealt with delivery options. The next objective was to find a good pull quote that I could highlight on my back page. I left a large gap in the center that I wanted to place a reflected image of my title logo with text over the top. This fell perfectly into place with my pull quote. The headline and the logo created for it was meant to reflect my personal logo. I incorporated a computer into the circle of the header to convey what this newsletter was about. For future issues of this newsletter a different icon could easily be replaced to reflect the topic. Finally, I chose to take the pros and cons section of the article and created a table for it that I dedicated to one full page to give it some emphasis. As for the layout of this piece, I wanted to keep with my style of a clean, grid like structure. I tried to arrange all of the body copy in a way that was easy to read and did not conflict with imagery or accompanying elements of my design. In the end I think that I created a very easy to read piece that has a simple layout and gets the point across well.
